Self-Study - Importance and Benefits for Students

Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare it today. It is the best investment that pays off the best interest rate in the long run. In modern day-to-day life, although a plethora of information and knowledge resources are available on the internet, modern-day learning still has a great tilt towards the traditional culture of classroom-based teaching. At this point, it is necessary to introduce a crucial aspect of learning – “Self-Study”.

Self-study, also known as Autodidacticism, is the devotion of time and attention to gaining knowledge of an academic subject without assistance from a teacher or tutor. It is an effective way of studying in which students direct their own study, without any direct supervision.

Self-study endorses the students to enhance their learning skills and broaden their thinking level apart from preparing them for examinations. It plays a vital role in extracting the most out of a student’s own learning experience, giving the right boost and motivation for further exploration of topics they are interested in. The process of self-study is based on quality rather than quantity.

Every student has his/her own preferred methodology of studying that’s no different while self-studying. Self-study gives students a sense of freedom to plan and schedule flexibly and improvising learning without constraints. The teaching-learning process is entirely student’s prerogative, which helps build confidence and uplift a child’s morale.

Self-study aids in better comprehension of the subject matter, allowing the student to score better. Using self-study, they can go beyond simply learning what their class textbooks and instructors teach them. If a child practices self-study, it enables them to self-assess themselves and increases the enthusiasm and passion for learning new skills. It safeguards the child from self-criticism, which is another nightmare in a classroom scenario.

It must be acknowledged that self-study makes the student learn through exposure and not by nailing things down. It is more like moisture accumulation in clouds rather than building a brick wall.

1. Learning at their own pace - Self-Study allows students to learn at their own pace, which reduces the feeling of frustration and anxiety that students may struggle with within the classroom system.

2. It can boost students’ self-esteem - Self-study instills a sense of self-esteem in the students’ minds. They will see themselves as independent persons who can learn new things without anyone helping them. This can be a major motivation boost for students.

3. Develops ownership of learning - They become their masters. By self-learning, students build an immense sense of self-confidence that helps them deal with their life possibilities.

4. Encourages curiosity - Curiosity is one of the most significant chunks for motivating students to learn independently.  A self-learner is driven by curiosity and keeps learning for the sheer enjoyment of it. Self-study allows students to choose something they are interested in and excited to learn about, leading to a more effective learning experience.

5. Learning Becomes Effective -  Exploring a topic on their own encourages students to engage with the information actively. And when students are involved in what they are learning, they’re able to remember it better.

6. Freedom to use various models of learning - Students have a variety of learning modes to choose from. It could be from YouTube, books, podcasts, webinars, or any online learning software, including self-learning through quizzes, PDFs, assignments, etc. The options are endless!

Technology today has touched every domain of human life. The most crucial setback of self-study is the loneliness that the student faces. Modern technology has made subsequent efforts to subside these emotions and boredom by making learning available to the students at the next level. Self-learning has come out to be a great gift of modernization. No matter what the future has stored in for you, the power to shape your future is in your hands. Earlier it was No Age for Learning, and now it is No Time for Learning- every time is learning time; in fact, self-study has proved to come out as bliss for passionate and enthusiastic learners. Most importantly, self-learning can be tailored to fit into each student’s unique schedule as resources are available ‘round the clock!
